Appearing on the hit reality television show The Amazing Race 15 was a great experience even for a couple of guys who make a living traveling all over the world. Nathan “Big Easy” Lofton and Herb “Flight Time” Lang of the Harlem Globetrotters finished in fourth place during the recently ended season of the reality show and they said they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to travel the world competing on the program.
I interviewed the two teammates at the BOK Center this past weekend as the Globetrotters were in town.
“It was great and we really did have a good time doing The Amazing Race, but it wasn’t easy,” said Lofton.
The contestants on the show are only permitted to travel with the bare essentials which must fit in one piece of luggage.
“We couldn’t have hardly anything; no cell phone, no credit cards, just you and your partner,” Lofton said.
“All you have is your backpack. There is a soundman and a cameraman with you. The sound guy kept the credit card and he would be the one to buy the tickets to get to the next location,” Lang said.
They were always on the go and never stayed in one location more than a couple days.
“The whole season was shot in 21 days, and we would be in one location anywhere from six hours to 36 hours, so we were always moving and always traveling to the next place,” Lofton said.
Lang said there was absolutely nothing staged about the show, unlike some of the other supposed reality shows.
“The show and the producers were really not in control of anything in regard to how everyone did or who won each challenge, and who ultimately won the whole thing,” Lang said. “They didn’t do anything to help any team succeed and they didn’t interfere if we messed up.”
Lang said being on the program has made him even more recognizable than even being a member of the Globetrotters.
“It is great now meeting people who saw us on the show and they recognize us,” Land said. “Many people are coming to watch us play because they saw us on The Amazing Race.”
Lang said he and Lofton took the challenge very seriously and were hoping to win the $1 million grand prize.
“We wanted to win, and just going through that with Big Easy has certainly brought us closer together,” Lang said. “It helps with having a good relationship as we travel with the team and work together now on a regular basis. If we had won, we would have donated the majority of the money, but we got a small amount of money for finishing fourth. We did win two trips; one to the Turks and Cacaos, and one to Aruba, and I’ve never been to either place.”
They both agreed that if they were asked to be on the show again, they would love to give it another go.
“If they have an all-star Amazing Race we would love to do it again,” Lang said.
TROTTERS’ GAME
The Harlem Globetrotters played two games against the Washington Generals. It was the second year that the two teams staged two performances in a weekend at the BOK Center. Last year, they played on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, and this year it was a Saturday double-header. Both performances drew large crowds.
Broken Arrow resident and winner of NBC television’s The Biggest Loser, Danny Cahill, suited up for the Generals and saw a couple minutes of playing time in the second quarter of the night game. Cahill took a long shot from behind the arc and nailed a three-pointer. The crowd erupted and both teams huddled around Cahill to congratulate him.
“That was awesome,” Cahill said after the game. “I really had a great time out there, it was a lot of fun and I probably couldn’t make that shot again if I wanted to.”
There’s a new twist to the Globetrotters’ show this season, so if you’ve seen the team in the past you will see new things this year, plus some of the old favorite routines are still there for those who have come to love the classic Globetrotter bits.
If you missed the team this time around, don’t worry, they are scheduled for an unprecedented third appearance in Tulsa this season, April 9 at 7 p.m., again at the BOK Center.
ORU AT HOME
The ORU Golden Eagles have a pair of conference games at the Mabee Center this week as they host North Dakota State on Thursday night and South Dakota State on Saturday evening. Game times are 7:05 p.m.
OILERS HOME TOO
The Tulsa Oilers have a pair of home games this weekend, as well. Colorado comes to town on Friday night and then Mississippi will visit the BOK Center on Saturday.
Game times are 7:35 p.m.
